Outreach Laboratory Services: A Strategic View

The Laboratory Industry: The Current View

National spending for clinical laboratory services is currently estimated to be $40.1 billion. The U.S. clinical laboratory industry is comprised of four major groups: hospital, independent, physician office labs and other labs. These groups divide the total lab market (total revenue) as is depicted in the following chart:

The two major commercial laboratories hold a large portion of the total laboratory market at almost 25% of the total revenue. However, the fastest growing groups are the small independent labs (10% growth rate) and the hospital labs (6% growth rate). This compares with a growth rate of 3.7% for the two major laboratories, a growth rate which includes their very aggressive acquisition strategies.

Given these relative growth rates, it is apparent that both the hospital labs and the small independent labs have an opportunity to continue these leading growth positions by utilizing their best strengths:

Both of these groups can continue to lead the clinical lab industry in growth rates if they can establish themselves as a viable business, capable of constructing keen strategies that leverage their strengths and obviate their weaknesses. However, there are significant challenges.

 Hospital Laboratory Outreach Overview

In a recent survey of hospital outreach programs conducted by Park City Solutions, it was revealed that 74% of the respondents are currently involved in an active outreach lab venture. Of those respondents that are not currently operating a lab outreach program (LOP), 37.5% plan to initialize a program within the next 2 years. However, the same survey also cited the following issues:

The profitability for the LOP’s surveyed ranged from 2% to 58%. This information sets the stage for the good and bad news that it is possible to operate a very profitable LOP but that most hospital laboratories do not possess the tools and experience necessary to maximize that profit. The tools are commercially available for purchase but how can an LOP be assured of the most rapid transformation to maximum profitability without adequate commercial lab experience? These issues are not exclusive to the hospital outreach program; these same issues result in the failure of many small independent laboratories that fail to commit to the same business tactics as those utilized by the major laboratories. Clinical Lab Business Solutions, LLC (CLBS) can help your laboratory establish the business techniques necessary to assure the success of your laboratory.
